EROAD’s innovative electronic weight-mile tax service is the focus of a joint Case Study prepared by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the New Zealand technology company.
EROAD implemented its electronic weight-mile tax solution in Oregon in 2014 with the support of ODOT and the OTA (Oregon Trucking Association). The deployment is analysed in a paper co-authored by Gregg Dal Ponte, Administrator, ODOT Motor Carrier Transportation Division, and Brian Michie, Senior Vice President/Founder, EROAD.
The case study describes the innovative elements that characterise the Oregon electronic road tax service, which was developed with no state government funding, relying instead on voluntary enrolment by transport operators. It discusses EROAD’s technology, the public policy environment, the procurement and approval process, the commercial model, the agency’s role and perspective, and the response from the industry.
“This is a great example of how state auditors can help government and business use cutting edge technology to save money and improve performance,” Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon and former Oregon Secretary of State, said.
With commercial launch in Oregon, EROAD became the first approved electronic weight-mile tax service provider in North America.
“We are excited about the opportunity to highlight the very successful partnership between EROAD, ODOT and commercial transport operators, which has enabled the efficient modernisation of a paper-based road taxing regime,” Brian Michie said.
